MONK ON THE RUN
It´s a hot, clear, Sunday morning in Kenya´s Western Highlands. At the end of a road in the town of Iten the boys of St Patrick´s School are in their free hour between lessons and lunch. Some are lying in the sun watching a game of football, others are on the basketball court playing with an old ball. Some are working out in the outdoor gym behind the classrooms.
The headteacher, Brother Colm O´Connell, pauses on his walk around the school. “Wilson Kipketer is a student here. He´s very good for his age and soon he could compete with anyone”. Over the years, St Paatrick´s has produced many top athletes – and all trained by Brother Colm.
When O´connell arrived in 1976, he knew nothing about athletics. Now he selects about sixty a year to train seriously – they get up at 5 am and train when they are not studying.
“We´re a very poor school. We´ve got very little equipment, sometimes the students haven´t got running shoes,” says O´Connell. “But we improvise – what we don´t have we try to make ourselves:”
Kenya has good record in the Olympics, and most of their successful athletes are St Patrick´s boys “Kenyans run naturally and their talent is not related to drugs”, O´Connell explains.
So what is the secret? “I don´t really have a training programme”, says O´Connell. “Here the boys run because they like it. But what they say about success is true – 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration”.
